Adding altogether means we will count all the objects in both the boxes
In the figure below first box has 4 rats and second box has 3 rats and altogether we have 7 rats in third box.
So we can say that
4 rats and 3 rats is equal to 7 rats
Similarly
5 rats and 4 rats is equal to 9 rats
In the figure below first box has 5 rats and second box has 4 rats and altogether we have 9 rats in third box.
